What EES changed

Since the phased rollout completed in April, passport stamps are gone for non-EU visitors. At your first Schengen entry you register biometrics; on later trips it’s a quicker verification. The system also counts your days automatically against the 90-in-180 rule, so overstays are now detected at the border.

Summer 2026 saw long queues at major hubs — Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid, Lisbon and Rome all reported peak-morning waits — as first-time registrations piled up. Airports have added kiosks, but the advice stands: arrive earlier for morning long-haul arrivals, and build a larger return buffer if you leave the airport on a layover.

ETIAS: what it is and why the date keeps moving

ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation (like the US ESTA) for visa-exempt nationals, planned to cost a small fee and last three years. The EU’s public timeline says last quarter of 2026 with a grace period into 2027. Legal-industry trackers and reports citing eu-LISA, the agency building it, say a 2026 launch is no longer realistic. Until the Commission sets a firm start date, there is nothing to apply for.

What it means for you

• Arriving from outside the EU: expect 20–45 minutes at passport control at peak times on a first visit; carry the same passport for the whole trip.
