One terminal, one roof, one train station directly beneath it. Schiphol is a transfer machine when it works, with a Rijksmuseum annex airside, a library, and decent lounges. Its weakness is peak-season security and staffing — 2022's chaos is over but summer mornings still get tight.
01Connections
Schengen↔Schengen: 40–50 min minimum. Non-Schengen↔Schengen requires passport control; allow 75–90 min. Long walks between piers.
Airlines publish legal minimums per terminal pair; these figures are our comfortable recommendation, not the legal minimum. Verify with your airline for your specific itinerary.
02Sleep & nap options
Fair. YOTELAIR airside (Lounge 2, hourly cabins) and the Mercure landside inside the terminal. Public seating is armrested; quiet corners in Pier D/E.
- airside transit
YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol (airside) — Airside, Lounge 2. Hourly cabins with showers; no immigration needed.
- on airport
Sheraton Amsterdam Airport — Walkway from Schiphol Plaza. Covered walk from the terminal; the go-to for 06:00 flights.
- near airport
citizenM Schiphol Airport — 5-minute walk from the terminal. Compact rooms, good bar, walkable — a strong value pick.
03Showers
YOTELAIR sells shower-only slots; also in KLM Crown, Aspire and Priority Pass lounges.
04Food & coffee
Wide and fairly priced by European hub standards; Schiphol Plaza landside has a supermarket (Albert Heijn) for cheap snacks.
05Wi-Fi & charging
Free, reliable.

07Getting into Amsterdam
| Mode | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NS Intercity train | 15–20 min to Amsterdam Centraal | Directly under the terminal; trains every 10–15 min; also direct to Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht. |
| Bus 397 / Amsterdam Airport Express | ~30 min to Leidseplein | Useful for Museumplein hotels. |
| Taxi | 20–40 min | Fixed-rate options exist; traffic at 07:30–09:30 is heavy. |
08Transit & visa reminder
Schengen rules apply. Non-Schengen transit passengers with an onward non-Schengen flight can stay airside without a visa in most cases; leaving the airport means Schengen entry (EES biometrics apply since 2025).
09Layover ideas by time window
- Under 4h
Airside: Rijksmuseum Schiphol, the library, or a lounge. Do not attempt the city.
- 4–7h
Train to Centraal for a canal walk and back with 2h+ buffer, if you can enter Schengen.
- 7h+
Amsterdam for lunch and a museum, or a Haarlem side trip (15 min by train, quieter).
10Traveler warnings
- Security in summer 2026 still queues at 05:00–08:00; arrive early for morning departures.
- Pier walks are long — up to 20 minutes end to end.
- The airport train station is easy to misread: check the platform, not just the departure board.
11Frequently asked
Is Amsterdam city worth a layover from Schiphol?
With five hours or more, yes — the train reaches Centraal in under 20 minutes. Keep a two-hour return buffer and check passport-control queue times.
