TIPPING // EUROPEAppreciated but optional

Tipping in Portugal

Not strongly expected; round up or leave 5–10% for good service.

The short answer

Not strongly expected; round up or leave 5–10% for good service. Couvert (bread, olives) on the table is charged if you eat it — that's not a tip.

What to tip, service by service

Restaurants
Round up, or 5–10% at restaurants.
Bars & cafés
Leave small change.
Taxis & rideshare

Hotels
A euro or two per night.
Tour guides & drivers
5–10% for guides.
Good to know

Couvert (bread, olives) on the table is charged if you eat it — that's not a tip. Customs shift over time and by venue, and tourist areas often expect more than locals give. When in doubt, a small tip in the local currency and cash is rarely wrong.
