TIPPING // EUROPEAppreciated but optional

Tipping in France

Service is included by law ('service compris') — extra is a small bonus.

The short answer

Service is included by law ('service compris') — extra is a small bonus. You never need to tip a percentage — the bill already includes service.

What to tip, service by service

Restaurants
Round up or leave a few euros for good service; a full percentage isn't expected.
Bars & cafés
Round up or leave small change.
Taxis & rideshare
Round up.
Hotels
A euro or two per night is a kind gesture.
Tour guides & drivers
5–10% for a private guide.
Good to know

You never need to tip a percentage — the bill already includes service. Customs shift over time and by venue, and tourist areas often expect more than locals give. When in doubt, a small tip in the local currency and cash is rarely wrong.
