Step one: what’s the departure time?

• 07:00–09:00 — depends on the transfer. Under 30 minutes by reliable rail, city is fine. Over 45 minutes, airport.
• After 09:00 — city hotel, almost always.

Step two: is this a layover or an overnight?

Airside transit hotels (Oryx at Doha, YOTELAIR at Schiphol and CDG, Dubai International Hotel) exist for connections. If you never need to clear immigration, don’t. The price per hour looks high but you save two security screenings and an hour of walking.

Step three: what does a bad night cost?

Add up the taxi at 4 a.m., the risk of missing the flight, and the value of arriving rested for whatever you’re flying to. A modest airport hotel room often pays for itself against a single missed connection.

Step four: which type?

• Inside terminal / walkway — no weather, no shuttle wait. Best for very early departures.
• Free shuttle — cheaper, but shuttle frequency matters at 4 a.m. Confirm the schedule.
• Capsule / pod — cheapest private sleep; check landside vs airside and minimum block.
• City centre — best for everything except early departures.
