How Early Should You Get to the Airport? A Real Answer by Airport Type

Work backwards, not forwards

The departure time is irrelevant; the gate-closing time is what you must beat. Domestic gates typically close 15 minutes before departure; European short-haul 20–30; long-haul international 30–45. Bag-drop cutoffs are usually 45–60 minutes before departure. Put those in your calendar, then add the time for security, walking and the unexpected.

Airport-by-airport reality

• Small and regional airports: 60–90 minutes domestic is normal.
• Large single-terminal hubs (AMS, ZRH, MUC, SIN, HKG): two hours works for most flights; security is efficient, but walks are long.
• Sprawling multi-terminal hubs (JFK, LAX, LHR, CDG, ORD): two hours domestic, three international, and confirm your terminal before you leave the hotel — going to the wrong one costs 30–45 minutes.
• US-bound from pre-clearance airports (Dublin, Toronto, Abu Dhabi, Shannon): three hours; you clear US immigration before boarding.
• Israel, and some other high-security departures: airlines ask for three hours or more.

When to add time

• Checked bags (queues at bag drop are the most variable part).
• Monday mornings, Friday evenings, school holidays, the week before Christmas.
• Document checks at the desk for the US, Australia, or visa-required destinations.
• Weather already delaying the day — queues cascade.
• A group, kids, a stroller, or a wheelchair assistance booking.

When you can cut it

• PreCheck, Fast Track or a premium-cabin lane.
• No bags and a mobile boarding pass.
• Off-peak departure (mid-morning, mid-afternoon).
• An airport that publishes live wait times you’ve checked that morning.
