The short version
- JFK — most long-haul routes, best lounges (T4, T8), AirTrain + LIRR to Penn Station in ~40 minutes. Five terminals that don’t connect airside.
- EWR (Newark) — United’s fortress plus many European carriers; NJ Transit to Penn Station in ~30 minutes; the new Terminal A is excellent, Terminal B and C vary. Often the lower fare.
- LGA (LaGuardia) — rebuilt and now genuinely pleasant, but domestic-focused. Closest to Midtown by taxi, worst by transit.
Decide by where you’re sleeping
Manhattan east side, Brooklyn, Queens: JFK. Manhattan west side, Hoboken, Jersey City, anywhere in New Jersey: Newark. Midtown with a taxi budget: either.
Decide by connection risk
If your international flight connects from a domestic one, stay on one ticket and, ideally, one alliance. JFK terminals require re-clearing security when you switch; Newark’s Terminal C keeps United connections airside; LaGuardia to JFK is a taxi ride you never want to make on a schedule.
Decide by lounges
JFK T4 and T8 hold the best lounges in the region. Newark’s Polaris lounge is strong if you’re flying United Polaris; Terminal A has a Centurion Lounge. LaGuardia has good domestic lounges only.
Watch the weather and the time of day
All three share the same congested airspace. Summer afternoon thunderstorms delay everything; early-morning departures are the most reliable. On a stormy afternoon, no airport is safer than another — pad the connection instead.
Frequently asked
Which New York airport is best for international flights?
JFK has the most international routes and lounges; Newark is often cheaper and better for Manhattan's west side and New Jersey; LaGuardia is mostly domestic with a few Canadian and Caribbean flights.
Is Newark really in New York?
It's in New Jersey, about 30–45 minutes from Midtown by NJ Transit or 45–90 minutes by road. For many Manhattan hotels it is as convenient as JFK.
