How to Do Holi

India's festival of colours.

When & how it works

When: The full-moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna — usually in March, set by the lunar calendar, so the date shifts each year.

Tickets: Free + ticketed parties — The street celebrations are free. Many hotels and event companies run ticketed Holi parties with music, safe colours and food — a good first-timer option in the big cities.

What it is

People fill the streets throwing coloured powder and water in a joyful welcome to spring. Mathura and Vrindavan host the most famous, days-long celebrations; cities also run organised Holi parties.

How to get started

  1. Decide between the raw street version (free, intense) and an organised Holi event or hotel party (ticketed, safer, controlled).
  2. If you want the famous version, base near Mathura or Vrindavan and plan for several days of celebration.
  3. Wear white, old clothes; oil your hair and skin; seal your phone and camera in plastic.

Tickets & where to buy

Where to stay
Book accommodation in the Mathura–Vrindavan area early; it's a major pilgrimage draw at Holi.
First-timer tips
Use natural, skin-safe colours where you can, and protect your eyes. Organised events are the gentler introduction.
Watch out
Crowds can be overwhelming and, in some public settings, women have reported harassment — many choose organised, family-friendly events for a safer experience.
Dates move — check before you book

Several of these festivals are tied to Easter or a lunar calendar, so the exact dates shift each year. Confirm the current year's dates and ticket on-sale times from the official source before you book flights.
