- Book the Colosseum and Vatican months ahead — timed tickets sell out.
- Take the FL1 train to Trastevere if that's where you sleep; it's cheaper than the Express.
- Eat lunch as your main meal; trattorias are cheaper and calmer at midday.
- Ostia Antica beats a second day of queues.
01Best time to visit
April–May and late September–October: warm, not brutal, and the queues are bearable. July–August is hot and packed; November–February is quiet and often cheap.
02Arrival airport
Fiumicino (FCO) with the Leonardo Express to Termini in 32 minutes or the cheaper FL1 regional train to Trastevere. Ciampino (CIA) serves low-cost carriers with bus links. EES biometric registration applies to non-EU arrivals.
03Neighborhood selector
| Neighborhood | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Centro Storico (Pantheon / Navona) | First trip, everything walkable | Noisy, pricey, magical. |
| Monti | Character, wine bars, near the Forum | Small, book early. |
| Trastevere | Evenings, trattorias | Loud at night; charming by day. |
| Prati | Calm, near the Vatican, value | Metro A; residential. |
04Accommodation strategy
Small hotels and B&Bs in old buildings — check for lifts and air-conditioning. City tax is charged per night in cash or at check-out.
05Transit basics
Walk. The Metro has two useful lines (A and B); buses are unreliable. Taxis have fixed fares from the airports and metered rates in town.
06Cost expectations
Moderate: hotels are the big spend; food is good value away from the main piazzas. Book the Vatican and Colosseum online with timed entry.
07Food & local etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees in churches; a coperto (cover charge) is normal; tipping is rounding up. Watch for the fake 'gladiator' photo hustle.
08Photography & creator notes
The Pantheon at opening time; Aventine keyhole at sunset; the Forum from the Capitoline terrace. Early mornings are the only crowd-free window in season.
