- Take the Airport Rail Link, then BTS — skip the taxi queue at peak.
- Eat where the queue is Thai.
- Use river boats to the Old City instead of sitting in traffic.
- Get an eSIM before landing; data is cheap and essential for Grab.
01Best time to visit
November–February: cooler and dry — peak season. March–May is very hot; June–October is the rainy season with short heavy storms and lower prices.
02Arrival airport
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) for most international flights; Don Mueang (DMK) for many low-cost carriers. From BKK, the Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in 30 minutes; metered taxis take 40–80 minutes. Many nationalities enter visa-free.
03Neighborhood selector
| Neighborhood | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Sukhumvit (Asok–Thonglor) | First trip, BTS access, nightlife | Traffic; endless dining. |
| Riverside | Luxury hotels, boats, views | Farther from the BTS. |
| Old City (Rattanakosin / Banglamphu) | Temples, backpackers | No rail; use boats and taxis. |
| Ari / Phaya Thai | Local cafés, calm | Great value on the BTS line. |
04Accommodation strategy
Exceptional value at every level; boutique hotels for the price of a hostel elsewhere. Book riverside hotels early in high season.
05Transit basics
BTS Skytrain and MRT are cheap and air-conditioned; Chao Phraya express boats beat traffic to the Old City. Use Grab or metered taxis — insist on the meter.
06Cost expectations
Among the best-value big cities in the world. Street food for a couple of dollars; rooftop cocktails cost Western prices.
07Food & local etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees at temples; never touch anyone's head or point feet at Buddha images; keep calm in disputes. The monarchy is protected by law.
08Photography & creator notes
Wat Arun at sunset from the opposite bank; Chinatown (Yaowarat) at night; the rooftop at Mahanakhon. Bring a lens cloth — humidity fogs everything.
