O'Hare is a connection machine for United and American. Terminals 1–3 are connected airside; Terminal 5 (most international carriers) is separate, reached by the ATS train. The Hilton sits inside the airport between the terminals and the CTA Blue Line runs to downtown around the clock. Winter weather is the enemy.
01Connections
Within T1–T3 airside: 60–75 min. T5↔T1–3: 90–120 min via ATS and re-clearing security. International arrival onward: 2.5–3h.
Airlines publish legal minimums per terminal pair; these figures are our comfortable recommendation, not the legal minimum. Verify with your airline for your specific itinerary.
02Sleep & nap options
Fair. The on-airport Hilton is the reliable option; the T5 landside area has benches; some airside quiet areas. Winter cancellations fill the Hilton fast.
- on airport
Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport — Underground walkway from Terminals 1–3, 5–10 min. Inside the airport; day rooms and a gym you can use between flights.
- near airport
Hyatt Regency O'Hare (Rosemont) — Free shuttle or ATS + walk, 10–15 min. Big convention hotel in Rosemont; cheaper than the Hilton.
03Showers
Hilton day rooms and the fitness centre; premium lounges (Polaris, Flagship, Centurion).
04Food & coffee
Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 have the best options (local Chicago names); T5 improved after its expansion.
05Wi-Fi & charging
Free; power outlets are better in T1 and T3.
